DeskShow 2.2 is a Windows utility allowing easy manipulation and use of graphics
image files for desktop wallpaper, an on-screen slide shows, or as a screen saver
slide show.
DeskShow has an easy to use interface consisting of an image file list, or ImageList,
and preview panes to give you information about each file and an image preview in
the main window. DeskShow allows you to use Windows Bitmap files, JPEG, TIFF, PNG,
PCX, TGA, or WMF image files for display on your Windows desktop or as part of an
on-screen slide show (ScreenShow).
DeskShow uses an ImageList as its main document, to which you add or remove image
files, and which is used as the set of image files that will be used for changing
your wallpaper or ScreenShow images. A plethora of user preferences allow you to
customize the way your wallpaper is changed, how ScreenShows run, and how the screen
saver runs, all from a tabbed preference dialog window. A number of functions and
options in DeskShow also allows you to use it as your image file manager, locating,
converting, saving or deleting image files from your system.
DeskShow is designed to be run in the background while you work in Windows. It can
be minimized to the system tray, and will automatically change your wallpaper based
on a configurable timer and other user preferences if desired. A pop-up menu from
the DeskShow icon in the system tray allows easy access to primary DeskShow functions,
or allows one-click access to manually change your wallpaper.
You can use DeskShow's ScreenShow function and available options to run on-screen
slide shows either full-screen or in a window, preview image files from a source
(CD-ROM or network drive), save or delete displayed images on your system while
the ScreenShow is running, or run an image based presentation by ordering your images
and manually sequencing through them. Additionally, the screen saver function built
into DeskShow allows you to have a full-screen ScreenShow run as your screen saver
instead of other Windows screen saver modules.
DeskShow can automatically adjust the number of colors used in the desktop wallpaper
image or screen show images to compensate for display settings with less than hi-color
(16 bit) displays using an optimized quantization algorithm. This allows Jpeg images
to be used on 256 color displays with minimal degradation in displayed image quality.
DeskShow can also automatically tile small images that are smaller than a threshold
percentage of the total screen area, which you specify in your preferences.
DeskShow also features Integral Tiling, which will only tile as many whole copies
of the original image as will fit on the screen, and centers those tiled images,
eliminating the ugly partial images wrapping off the screen that normal tiling usually
creates.
DeskShow also includes a utility to convert between the various image file types
that DeskShow supports, and allows you to change color depths or compression levels
during conversion for some types to optimize images for display or file size. Additionally,
an image file finder tool allows you to seek out image files on your system or on
the network that can be used with DeskShow, and allows you to add them to your ImageList
or delete them from your system.
DeskShow also has remote configuration options, which allow you to use a centralized
set of preferences and ImageList over the network, so that multiple clients can
use the same settings and images for DeskShow. This feature can be used in the business
environment to post notices and announcements to employees on their Windows Desktop
throughout the business day.
Finally, an extensive system of Help topics thoroughly covers all the myriad of
functions and options that DeskShow contains, allowing you to quickly learn how
to use DeskShow in the way that best suits you.
DeskShow is an extremely flexible and easy to use utility that combines the best
features of many other desktop wallpaper, slide show, and screen saver utilities.
