Why Why Why Why Why no wireless???

I don’t get it. Why is it that every little Podunk airport I fly through (yesterday it was Ft. Wayne IN) has wireless internet access in the airport, but many major commuter hubs (Washington National, Dulles, Chicago, etc.) do not. I realize that for the bigger airport they would need to invest in a number of access points to give wide coverage. But it wouldn’t be that expensive. How many years is it going to be before you can reliably connect while killing time in an airport?

Come on, Brian! We geeks have to have a backup plan. I _never_ have a problem connecting _anywhere_ I go. If there is WiFi, great, I use it, but most of the time, there isn't, or I have to go find it, and that's a hassle. A year ago, I bought the cheapest Sprint phone in the store. I pay $15/month extra for unlimited wireless web through the phone. With a $35 USB cable from Radio Shack for my phone (it comes with drivers), my cell phone becomes a USB modem hooked to my laptop. It's a lot cheaper than the PCMCIA wireless cell cards, and I get the same speed (roughly ISDN, but it relies on signal strength). Tech Ed was pitiful for WiFi, but I never worried because I just whipped out my phone. I was advice getting this type of solution. Then you will never have to worry about getting connected again.

Unfortunately I am currently in cell-connectivity limbo. I got an Audiovox SMT5600 smartphone in June and love it so far. Just one hitch - they don't have USB drivers for the phone yet, Cingular doesn't support bluetooth connectivity, and I can get the damn thing working as a modem myself. So I either have to wait for a connectivity option there, or I need to shell out for a wireless card to use verizon or something. I'll probably go the latter route since it is about the same monthly charge as cingular (once I can connect through them) and Verizon has superior speed for now.

No wireless because terrorists will misuse that awesome technology. Hasn't happened yet, but WiMax etc. will face this problem one day very very soon.
